A 'thread' is a message that people can reply to and are on different subjects. It's a way of having conversations on message boards. That way people can reply only to the threads that they are interested in and the comments won't get all jumbled together.
For example, you could have 1 thread on Cats, 1 on Anime and one on a Movie you saw at the theatre. People would reply if they have something to say on that subject.
It's a way of having multiple conversations going on at once on different subjects. Threads can be on ANY subject you want. Whatever you are interested in.... In a way it is very similar to the comments that people make to your Journal entries.
